Bill Carstanjen is the Chief Executive Officer of Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN) and is a member of its Board of Directors. Prior to being named in 2014 as the Company’s twelfth CEO in its 144 year history, he served as President & Chief Operating Officer beginning in January of 2009. Mr. Carstanjen joined Churchill in 2005 as the Executive Vice President, Chief Development Officer and General Counsel. Throughout his tenure, he has led the Company’s diversification and growth strategy beyond its traditional roots in horse track ownership into online and mobile wagering and regional casinos which are both significant divisions of the Company today. He has also led the continued growth and expansion of the Kentucky Derby which is one of the renown, iconic sporting and entertainment events throughout the world. When Mr. Carstanjen joined Churchill Downs, its prior year Revenues and EBITDA were $462.5 million and $42.0 million, respectively, and the market capitalization was $601.6 million. In fiscal year 2018, the Company Revenues and Adj. EBITDA were $1.0 billion and $332.2 million, respectively, and its market capitalization was $3.6 billion.

 

Prior to joining Churchill, Mr. Carstanjen was an executive with General Electric Company from 2000 to 2005 where his last role was as Managing Director and General Counsel of GE Energy Financial Services, a division of GE Capital. Mr. Carstanjen began his career as an attorney with Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, a prominent New York City law firm, where he focused on mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance and corporate governance. Mr. Carstanjen graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a graduate of the Columbia University School of Law where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He lives in Louisville with his wife, Julia, his son and his four daughters. Both he and his wife are active in the community participating in numerous charitable and civic ventures.
